Remembering Bob Fraser: A Tribute to the Sonoma County Wine Industry Veteran Who Passed Away at 75 Chris Lehoux, May 19, 2026 Robert “Bob” Fraser, a prominent figure in the North Coast wine community, passed away on May 13 at the age of 75 due to cardiac arrest. Fraser, beloved for his warmth and humor, shaped the careers of many wine professionals during his four-decade career. He was vital in developing Santa Rosa Junior College’s acclaimed wine education program and was instrumental in two major California wine competitions: the Sonoma County Harvest Fair Wine Competition and the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. His son, Scott Fraser, spoke fondly of him, describing his father’s infectious positivity and deep support. Despite facing several health issues in recent years, Fraser had recently appeared healthy and full of life, leaving many shocked by his sudden death. Friends and colleagues remembered Fraser for his cheerful nature, rigorous attention to detail, and integrity in all his endeavors. Larry Van Aalst, a retired sommelier, noted Fraser’s humility and his ability to connect with others, while wine writer Mike Dunne highlighted the joy of seeing Fraser announce competition winners. Originally from Sacramento, Fraser became involved with agriculture early in life and studied agricultural business at California Polytechnic State University, where he met his future wife, Cary. After starting his career as a high school agriculture teacher, he joined the faculty at Santa Rosa Junior College in 1987, where he recognized the demand for wine education and significantly expanded the program’s reach. Throughout his career, Fraser offered mentorship to countless students and faculty, fostering a supportive environment within the wine industry. His impact was particularly felt through the Cloverdale Citrus Fair Wine Competition, which he founded in 1987, and which became the largest wine judging event in North America under his guidance. Fraser is survived by his wife, Cary, and their three children: Scott, Brooke, and Alexandra, along with their grandchildren. In honor of his legacy, the family has established the Bob Fraser Memorial Scholarship through Cloverdale FFA. A public celebration of his life will occur at the Cloverdale Citrus Fairgrounds on July 12. For further information about the scholarship, donations can be sent to Cloverdale FFA, with checks payable to Cloverdale FFA Alumni and Supporters.
