Governor Spanberger Celebrates Virginia Wine Month: A Call to Support Local Growers

Chris Lehoux, October 3, 2026

October marks Virginia Wine Month, a time for residents to come together in support of local growers, winemakers, and small businesses in the beloved industry. This season is particularly significant as many vineyards faced adversity due to late spring frosts and ongoing drought conditions throughout the summer.

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger collaborated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, securing federal disaster assistance for over 100 localities impacted by these weather challenges. Many growers experienced significant losses due to the adverse weather conditions.

"This October is the perfect time to support the men and women who sustain this critical industry by visiting a Virginia winery or sharing a Virginia-grown bottle with friends and family," Governor Spanberger urged. She emphasized the dedication required for recovery from these setbacks and looks forward to continued federal support for Virginia’s vineyards.

Virginia’s wine industry boasts an economic impact exceeding $1.7 billion annually and consists of ten wine regions with over 300 wineries producing wine from more than 40 grape varieties.

The Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry, Katie Frazier, remarked that Virginia Wine Month is an opportunity to celebrate the dedication of farmers and winemakers. She noted that the state’s wineries bolster rural economies and support agritourism, attracting visitors from around the globe.

Residents can celebrate this month using various resources including tasting passes, local tasting events, and the "Harvest Party" on October 17, which invites people to gather for wine and local food festivities across the state. Further information about events and happenings can be found on the Virginia Wine Month website.
