End of an Era: Napa’s Historic Newton Vineyard to Close Permanently

Chris Lehoux, February 15, 2025

In a recent announcement, Napa’s Newton Vineyard confirmed it will permanently close after more than four decades of wine production. The winery’s decision, revealed to wine club members on February 13, comes in the wake of the devastating 2020 Glass fire that destroyed the facility. In their communication, representatives expressed their gratitude for the moments spent creating exceptional wines and engaging with their loyal wine enthusiasts.

Owned by luxury brand LVMH since 2001, Newton Vineyard had been operating in a temporary location since the wildfire, which wreaked havoc across Spring Mountain and drastically affected its infrastructure. The winery was originally established in 1977 by English journalist Peter Newton and his then-wife Su Hua, and over the years it became known for its exquisite craftsmanship and beautiful setting, complete with manicured gardens and mountain vistas.

Despite LVMH’s efforts to revamp the vineyard—investing $10 million to modernize the facilities and convert to organic practices—the decision to close was attributed to the long-lasting impact of the wildfire. Before its closure, the estate had cultivated a range of varietals over 74 acres, primarily focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon and acclaiming the Unfiltered Chardonnay—crafted by notable winemaker John Kongsgaard—as a benchmark in the industry.

Following the 2020 wildfires, which left only 5 acres of vines intact, staff members had initially announced plans to rehabilitate the vineyard and had even opened a temporary tasting room in Calistoga. However, the recent closure marks the end of an era for what was once a highly regarded institution in Napa Valley.

LVMH continues to own other notable properties in the region, including Colgin, Joseph Phelps, and Domaine Chandon.
