Reflecting on Legacy: Black-Owned Wine and Jazz Bar Closes After 4 Years, Celebrating Diversity

Chris Lehoux, February 28, 2025

In downtown Grand Rapids, the GRNoir Wine & Jazz Bar is preparing to close its doors after four impactful years, with its final day of operation set for February 28. Owners Shatawn and Nadia Brigham have reflected on their legacy, which emphasized a vibrant community atmosphere where people from diverse backgrounds gathered to enjoy wine, food, and live jazz music.

The Brighams are proud of the sense of belonging they cultivated among their patrons. Nadia noted that her husband’s leadership played a critical role in attracting a diverse customer base. “It was a place of community,” she said, emphasizing the welcoming vibe they established. The decor, featuring photos of jazz legends like John Coltrane and Nina Simone, alongside an inviting ambiance created a unique experience for customers, often reminding them of bustling cities like New York and Atlanta.

Over the years, the couple built numerous meaningful relationships within the community. Regular customers shared memories of reconnection and the sense of love they felt at GRNoir, highlighting its role in their personal stories. "We were one of the most diverse places in Grand Rapids," Nadia said, reflecting on the range of ages, professions, and backgrounds represented in their clientele.

Despite facing challenges in the post-pandemic economy, including inflation, the Brighams remain proud of what they accomplished. They are committed to honoring their journey with a farewell that acknowledges their patrons and artists. For their final week, they have organized a series of performances to celebrate Black History Month, including their annual Young, Gifted & Black series.

The Brighams are not saying goodbye to entrepreneurship; they have plans to explore new wine-related ventures in the future. As they prepare to close this chapter, they emphasize the importance of doing so with gratitude and respect for the community that supported them throughout their journey.
