Liquor Stores vs. Grocery Stores: Perspectives on the Future of Wine Sales in Supermarkets

Chris Lehoux, March 11, 2025

Residents of New York State may soon have the convenience of purchasing wine alongside their groceries, as major supermarket chains like Tops and Wegmans are advocating for the proposed Wine in Supermarkets Senate Bill. Currently, New York is one of only eleven states that prohibit wine sales in supermarkets, a situation some shoppers find perplexing.

Maryann Lewandowski, a shopper, expressed her confusion over this restriction, asking, "Why not? What is the big deal?" She believes that wine, which is widely available in many settings, should also be sold in grocery stores.

Kathy Sautter, the Director of Public Relations at Tops, emphasized the convenience this legislation would provide for customers attending social gatherings. She noted that the ability to buy wine, along with flowers or other items, could be beneficial for those going to events like dinner parties or birthday celebrations.

However, not all customers agree with this proposed change. Richard Englund prefers to shop at liquor stores, as he believes they offer a wider selection of wine. He pointed out that his grocery shopping is primarily for food, and he does not typically look for wine there.

Cyndi Leonard, from Colonial Wine and Spirits in Orchard Park, raised concerns about the impact of big box stores on local businesses. She highlighted the potential job losses for salespeople and trucking companies that could result from the new legislation.

As it stands, lawmakers aim to include this bill in the state budget due on April 1. If successful, this change could reshape how New Yorkers purchase wine in the future.
