Unveiling ‘Secret Indiana’ and ‘Brothers’: Notable Reads and a $25K Raise for NWI Symphony through May Wine Sales Chris Lehoux, July 17, 2025 Michael Carmichael’s whimsical project began in 1977 when he and his young son decided to paint an old baseball, intending to create a vibrant, kaleidoscopic display. Nearly fifty years later, the result is the "World’s Largest Ball of Paint," nestled in Alexandria, Indiana. This remarkable roadside attraction now boasts 30,000 layers of paint, weighs over five tons, and continues to draw curiosity from visitors worldwide. This quirky landmark is featured in Jamie Ward’s recent publication, "Secret Indiana: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful and Obscure." Released in April 2025 by Reedy Press, the 187-page guide highlights various outlandish and interesting sites across Indiana. Among its many features are tales of an underground bookstore tunnel, a massive fountain imported from Brazil, and a jail that rotates with a simple hand crank. Ward shares that the ball of paint grew far beyond its original plan. The project was initially intended to be sliced open to reveal its inner layers after only a few coats. "This guide is designed to lead readers to Indiana’s most unusual gems and provide a new perspective on the state’s history and culture,” she explains. Ward is known for her previous works, including "100 Things to Do in Indiana Before You Die." Additionally, the book showcases other intriguing stories, such as the preserved venue of Elvis’s last concert, the childhood home of the real "Little Orphan Annie," and eerie local legends involving haunted locations. "Secret Indiana" can be found online and in various retail stores, as well as at reedypress.com. In another notable event, Kevin Callahan, an author from Elgin, Illinois, will host a book signing for his 2020 release, "Brothers in Arms: Remembering Brothers Buried Side by Side in American WWII Cemeteries." The event will take place on July 17 at the Barrington Club in Hobart. Callahan’s book recounts the stories of brothers who served together and now lie side by side in military cemeteries abroad. His work features over 700 historical photographs alongside 72 poignant narratives. Lastly, the Women’s Association of Northwest Indiana Symphony Society has made a generous contribution to the local arts community. At their recent annual meeting, they presented a check for $25,000 to benefit the Northwest Indiana Symphony, showcasing their commitment to supporting regional cultural initiatives.
