Discovering Arizona Wine: How to Watch the New Film Exploring the Region’s Vintages Chris Lehoux, February 6, 2025 A new documentary titled "Vintage Arizona: The Heart of Winemaking" aims to bring the spotlight to Arizona’s growing wine industry. Produced by Kellie Mendoza and Sean Oliver of Chandler’s Amoroma Productions, the film is now available on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video. Mendoza, the producer, explained, "Our goal in making this movie was to elevate the Arizona wine industry… to put it on the wine map for the rest of the world." The documentary showcases four of the best winemakers from the 2022 Governor’s Cup: Cove Mesa Vineyard, Mogollon Vineyards, Callaghan Vineyards, and Caduceus Cellars & Merkin Vineyards. Their journeys led the filmmakers to explore additional stories of local winemakers. "Vintage Arizona" addresses the various obstacles and triumphs of viticulture in the state, including the unique climate that presents both challenges and advantages for grape growing. Arizona has three recognized American Viticultural Areas: Sonoita, Willcox, and the Verde Valley near Sedona. Oliver pointed out that, in contrast to other crops, grapevines require very little water, making them well-suited for Arizona’s climate. He added that Arizona’s diurnal temperature shift— the difference between high and low temperatures—is beneficial for grape quality. The film serves as an accessible introduction to Arizona’s wine regions, encouraging viewers to explore these areas for a weekend getaway. Oliver remarked, “You can watch it and in like an hour you can go to those places, drink those wines, and probably meet those winemakers.” Produced over three years, the documentary had its private premiere in November 2024 at LOOK Dine-In Cinemas in Chandler, featuring a Q&A with winemakers and opportunities for guests to taste the wines showcased in the film. Oliver, a filmmaker for 15 years, recognizes parallels between filmmaking and winemaking in Arizona, both flourishing despite being overshadowed by larger counterparts in California. He noted, “When that scale gets smaller, you often find a lot more passion." For those interested in both cinema and wine, "Vintage Arizona" distinctly captures the insights and struggles of Arizona’s winemaking community while promoting local exploration and appreciation for the craft.
