Wine Spectator’s “Bring Your Own Magnum” Party Makes a Comeback!

Chris Lehoux, June 6, 2025

On June 4, 2025, Wine Spectator’s iconic Bring Your Own Magnum Party returned after a five-year break, taking place at the Louis M. Martini winery in Napa Valley. This event gathered industry leaders and wine enthusiasts, making it one of the most anticipated gatherings in California’s wine country, coinciding with the Auction Napa Valley activities.

Carole Meredith from Lagier Meredith noted, “Everyone was starving for a Magnum Party,” highlighting the excitement among nearly 500 attendees. Linda Reiff, president of the Napa Valley Vintners, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need for such gatherings amidst the industry’s challenges.

The tradition of the Magnum Party began in 1988, and this year, senior editor James Molesworth announced plans to host the event weekly during Auction Napa Valley, reminiscent of its earlier days. The guest list was impressive, featuring industry veterans like Tim Mondavi of Continuum, winemaker Paul Hobbs, and many others, solidifying the event’s status within the wine community.

Attendees enjoyed a stunning array of magnum bottles, including notable selections such as the Abreu Cabernet Madrona Ranch 2012 and a 1964 Louis Martini Mountain Cabernet, which retained its delicious fruit character. Alongside the wines, a wide variety of delectable dishes was served, including pizzas, lobster ravioli, and ahi tuna cones, further enhancing the festive atmosphere.

Mel Mannion shared updates about the Wine Spectator Scholarship Foundation, which has contributed significantly to educating future generations in the wine and hospitality sectors. The foundation is currently finalizing the Wine Spectator Education Center at Napa Valley College, a project valued at $10 million.

As guests mingled under the sycamore trees, the atmosphere was filled with warmth and nostalgia. Vintner Bill Harlan captured the essence of the event, stating, “It’s a great tradition of Marvin’s that brings the wine community together,” reflecting on the supportive role that Wine Spectator has played in the Napa Valley.

This celebration not only marked the return of a beloved tradition but also reinforced the sense of community and camaraderie among California’s winemakers and enthusiasts alike.
