The Surprising Hack: Where a Pro Advises Storing Red Wine Just Before Opening! Chris Lehoux, December 11, 2024 Wine is a beloved beverage, but many of us may be making critical mistakes when selecting, storing, and serving it. To ensure you derive the maximum enjoyment from each bottle, we spoke with Jerry Chandler, the general manager of The Bohemian Wine Bar in Charlotte. Here are five common wine blunders to steer clear of: 1. Incorrect Serving Temperatures Many people serve white wine too cold and red wine too warm, preventing proper flavor expression. Ideally, white wines should be served in the 40s or 50s °F and red wines in the 50s or 60s °F. Pro Tip: Place red wine in the fridge for 10-15 minutes before serving to cool it down slightly. Alternatively, remove white wine from the fridge 15-20 minutes prior to serving to allow it to come to the correct temperature. 2. Improperly Opening Sparkling Wine When uncorking Champagne or sparkling wine, avoid the tendency to pop it aggressively. This can reduce the wine’s carbonation and can even be dangerous. How to do it safely: Unscrew and loosen the cage but leave it in place as you gently grip and twist it. This process helps relieve pressure safely and preserves more of the bubbles. 3. Poor Storage Conditions Improper wine storage can lead to spoiled bottles, even if consumed within a few hours. Wine should be kept dry, cool, and away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing wine in places with fluctuating temperatures, such as inside a vehicle. Store wine on its side in a consistently cool area to maintain quality. 4. Snobbery over Packaging It’s common to dismiss wines that use screw tops, but this prejudice can mean missing out on excellent budget-friendly options. Today’s screw tops are effective for preserving wine, making them just as reliable as traditional corks for wines intended for immediate consumption. 5. Sticking to the Familiar With thousands of grape varieties and producers, many of us fall into the trap of only consuming familiar brands. This not only limits your wine experience but can also mean missing out on better value options. Explore Your Palate: Engage with wine professionals at retail shops or restaurants to discover new wines based on your preferences. Wine offers endless opportunities for exploration, and stepping outside of your comfort zone can lead to newfound favorites. By avoiding these mistakes and exploring different wines thoughtfully, you can enhance your enjoyment and appreciation of this timeless beverage.
